Hi and thanks for looking me up! Yes, I’m the big dude behind EllisFit.com. 🙂
Let me tell you about myself…
Firstly, this blog is a bit out of character for me because I’m not much of a social person. Those that do know me would probably describe me as a bit awkward, slightly strange, keeps to himself, infrequently talks about his personal life… and then perhaps veer off into words I don’t want to put in print! (lol, joking on the last part, I hope).
Actually, the truth is, I’m not a very interesting guy. I really don’t care much about sports, cars, hunting, drinking, parties, etc. In short, the likelihood of me adding much value to any social conversation is pretty low. In fact, if I find myself in an elevator with someone my go-to topic is typically the weather, then I just hope I get to my floor as quickly as possible!
However, my big motivator in my life is my son. Yes, I’m a dad and I REALLY enjoy spending time with my son watching movies, playing games, fishing, metal detecting, collecting old coins, or just talking and doing nothing. My kid is awesome!
Then of course there’s the nerdy aspects of my life. I’ve always been very fond of science and technology. In fact, I’m a graduate from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Computer Science. I’ve also worked in various computer network & software engineering roles over the past 20 years.
Unfortunately, my overindulgence in technology hasn’t been without any negatives. The sedentary lifestyle of a “techie” has played a part in me becoming quite, well, out of shape. Perhaps I slammed down too many pizzas & Cokes during my many mentally strenuous years of pecking away at my keyboard… lol. Well, I can’t blame it all on that, but I do really like pizza and Coke!
So that’s the quick summary of me, but it doesn’t really describe my problem or my goal with this website…
Yes, the problem I battle each day is with my weight. They call it obesity, but I really hate that word.
Some of you may know me from my social media (Instagram, or Facebook) which I started in 2016 when I decided to document my efforts to tackle this problem. My social media account name is EllisDoesFitness, which pretty much sums up my goal to get healthier and more fit.
The goal sounds straightforward, but unfortunately, it’s a goal that I’ve been chasing my entire life; and only to be continuously disappointed and more out-of-shape as a result of my efforts.
Like many people, I had (well, I still have) a serious problem with food. It’s a real love/hate relationship with lots of ups and downs, and unfortunately, there have been more downs. In simple terms, it’s called overeating, however, that description doesn’t really describe the true complexities behind this problem.
Over the years I’ve watched my health become progressively worse. Eventually, at the age of 43, I weighed in at 494.6 pounds on the scale. It was the most I ever weighed and the absolute worst condition my body had ever seen.
Carrying all of that extra weight, my body ache just getting out of the bed in the morning. Short walks to my car were extremely painful on my joints. Going up and down stairs, forget about it! I’d even get so physically tired that I’d dose off to sleep several times throughout the day – anywhere and everywhere! One time I actually fell asleep in a drive-thru waiting for my junk food! Oh, the memories. 🙁
How did I let myself get to 495 pounds? I ask myself that all the time. There is no easy answer to that question, but I will talk about that topic in the fitness blog.
Weight Loss Journey
At my peak weight I absolutely knew that I couldn’t get any bigger, or I’d likely be a done deal before I made it to 50 years old. That was my tipping point.
However, I knew that I had tried numerous diets in the previous 20+ years of my life, and most of the time I never made it past the second or third day. To add to my troubles, I also knew I wasn’t a kid anymore at 43 years old, and my metabolism had likely slowed down. In short, my track record wasn’t good, and success would be even harder now that I’m older. The odds definitely weren’t in my favor.
There’s a popular saying that says something like “some people have to hit rock-bottom before they can work their way back up.” Well, I don’t believe that’s always necessary, but I do believe it was right on the money in my case, unfortunately.
After some very serious thought I eventually developed a game plan for my weight loss in 2016. Since that time I’ve learned a lot about: myself, food, exercise, health, fitness, aging, life, etc. I’ve had success with some things, and failure with other things, but I keep learning and trying to improve. I’ve also had plenty of setbacks, but so far I’ve been able to catch myself before those setback became permanent.
My journey is a long one, and actually, it’s a lifelong one. I’m certainly aware that I didn’t gain all of my weight over night, and I don’t expect to lose it quickly either. My focus is on taking small, practical and sustainable steps toward modifying my lifestyle to ultimately reach a much healthier and fit version of myself.
My intention is to use EllisFit as a way to share my experience (good & bad), as well as, my opinions on health and general fitness topics. I’d appreciate if readers could share feedback with me, too!
Of course, unlike the information technology field, I have no formal training in nutrition, diet, exercise or weight-lifting, but I’m very resourceful and eager to learn. My hope is to meet others and share experiences and motivation with each other.
My personal goal is lose a lot more weight, build a lot more muscle, and live a whole lot better. I encourage you to visit every once in a while. Watch me progress on my fitness journey. Cheer me on, leave some feedback in the comments, discuss your experience… or just laugh at me. I can take it! 🙂
Thanks for stopping by!
